Hobgoblins or Ghaal’dar are the “Mighty People” of the gobliniods races. War horns sound, stones fly from catapults, and the thunder of a thousand booted feet echoes across the land as hobgoblins march to battle. Across the borderlands of civilization, settlements and settlers must contend with these aggressive humanoids, whose thirst for conquest is never satisfied.
Legacy of Dhakaan
In ages past, hobgoblins and other goblinoids controlled Khorvaire. Over the course of thousands of years a host of goblinoid nations rose and fell. The greatest civilization of this age, the hobgoblin Empire of Dhakaan, bred goblins and bugbears as slaves and warriors.
Sixteen millennia ago, the hobgoblin Empire of Dhakaan stretched across Khorvaire. Then the daelkyr arrived, and despite the strength of the hobgoblins and their allies, they were no match for the lords of Xoriat. The Gatekeepers eventually banished the daelkyr, but Dhakaan was left crippled. By the time human settlers arrived from Sarlona, the ruined empire was easy prey for them. For long years, the only remnants of the goblinoids former might were isolated clans hiding in caves and wild places. Recently, a number of clans have resurfaced to take control of Darguun. That land is populated mostly by goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears, and it holds its own against Khorvaire’s other powers.
Dhakaani Hobgoblins tend to have burly builds, hairy skin and coarse body hair. Most of their body is covered in fine hair that ranges from dark reddish-brown to dark gray. They have dark orange or red-orange skin and eyes that are yellowish to dark brown. They have large, broad noses that tend to be blue or white. Their teeth are large and the bottom two cuspids jut up like fangs. Their ears are prominent and often move and convey great emotion.
Hobgoblins organize themselves into tribal bands known as legions. In their martial society, every hobgoblin has a rank, from the powerful leaders and champions, to the rank-and-file foot soldiers, to the goblins that find themselves driven into the front lines at spear point. A legion is headed by a warlord with several captains serving under its command. A hobgoblin warlord is a ruthless tyrant more interested in strategy, victory, glory, reputation, and dominion than leading troops into battle.
As loyal and disciplined as hobgoblins are in their own legion, rival legions compete constantly for reputation and status. Meetings between legions erupt in violence if troops aren’t restrained, and only exceptionally powerful leaders can force legions to cooperate on the battlefield.
Rise of Darguun
Both Breland and Cyre soon turned to House Deneith to supplement their armies, and Deneith in turn brought ever-increasing numbers of goblinoids out of the Seawall Mountains. Deneith’s profits soared, but ultimately this reliance on goblinoid soldiers had disastrous results. After seventy years of war, tens of thousands of well-armed goblins and hobgoblins were spread across the Cyre-Breland border. With the rise to prominence of the ambitious young hobgoblin Haruuc, all the conditions for the creation of the nation of Darguun were in place.
In 969 YK, the hobgoblins turned on the people they were supposed to be defending. Hundreds of humans were slain, while others fled into neighboring lands or were captured as slaves. Haruuc laid claim to the area, naming it Darguun and claiming the title of the Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat’kor—the High Warlord Haruuc of the Scarlet Blade—for himself.
The Ghaal’dar tribe rules Darguun, and its clans answer to Lhesh Haruuc. Racial roles are rigid in the tribe, with males and females enjoying similar status and roles, particularly among the bugbears and goblins. In the hobgoblin subculture, a vestige of the Dhakaani tradition sees males usually handle the warmaking while females deal with healing, magic, and diplomacy. In general, however, time and the Lhesh Haruuc’s diplomatic power have eroded the tribe’s Dhakaani roots, though they still retain the pride of their old empire.
Hobgoblin personal names usually consist of a given name, and the name of the band they were born into rather than a family name, even if that band has been disbanded or destroyed. This means that parent and child don’t always have the same family names and hobgoblins born outside of a band have no family name. Or you can try this useful hobgoblin name generator.
